India banned 59 chinese mobile applications-
Indian government banned 59 Chinese mobile applications that are too popular on social India network in India, including top social media platforms like TikTok, UC browser, Helo and WeChat, to counter the threat posed by these applications to the country’s safety and security. UC browser, share IT and Clubfactory ( shopping app ) are among the other emerging apps in India that have been completely banned during rising clashes between China and India following fights at the border two weeks ago.
The government of India said the applications are engaged in activities prejudicial to safety and integrity of India, defence of India, security of India. The ban has been imposed under Section (69A) of the knowledge Technology Act read with relevant provisions of the knowledge Technology (Procedure and Safeguards for Blocking of Access of Information by Public) Rules 2009, it said. The government also filed complaints about data on Indian users being transferred to abroad without government authorisation.
The move could come as a blow to China’s Digital Silk Route ambitions, decrease the valuation of the companies. It could also cause more countries following India’s cue and acting against these apps.
There is legitimacy in concerns of data security and citizens’ safety and privacy, it said. This proove credible action that protects individual liberty, safety & security interests.
The owners of TikTok and Helo, and Alibaba, which owns UC Browser, said they might not comment immediately.
Welcome move for indian social network-
The ad tech company InMobi that owns Roposo, a video app that competes with TikTok, said the move would open up the market for its platform while ShareChat, the Indian social network, welcomed the government’s move.
Bolo Indya, a rival to TikTok, says it'll enjoy the ban on its larger rival. We welcome the choice as we resonate the concerns raised by the govt. It's the opportunity for Bolo Indya and other Indian apps to present their value, keeping Indian culture and data safe, said Varun Saxena, it's CEO and Co- founder.
The competition will go slight down in social app in India-
Investors in Indian social apps say that competition will come down thanks to the ban on Chinese apps.
The competitive threat will go down. But tons of apps in India are inspired by the deft engineering of Chinese apps. Overall the ecosystem's ingenuity will hamper ,” said Deepak Gupta, founding partner at (WEH) Ventures, which has invested in Indian video blogging platform (Trell).
Analysts said the move by government will impact on the Chinese apps-
From a tactical perspective, it puts huge economic pressure because these apps were heavily reliable on Indian markets. From a legal perspective, it is sound because grounds like national safety and security are difficult to challenge in a court of law,” said Santosh Pai, partner at Link Legal, who tracks Chinese investments in the country. If this is often getting to be the new state of affairs, we'd like to ascertain whether Indian apps will fulfil the necessity or American apps will take market share.
